Blackbutt is known for its pale, even colour, and Australian Blackbutt offers that look as a laminate. If you like native hardwood but want a lower-cost, hard-wearing floor, compare it with our real Blackbutt hardwood before you decide.

The boards are 12 mm thick and 2260 × 236 mm, so they are longer and wider than many laminates. The 4D embossed-in-register (EIR) surface means the texture follows the printed grain, which makes it look and feel more like timber. Boards join with a Välinge 5G click system and are laid as a floating floor over underlay. Four boards per carton, 2.13 m².

Who chooses laminate Blackbutt

We see it chosen for investment properties, granny flats and family rooms that see heavy use. It is also a common choice in 1970s and 80s brick veneer homes around Doncaster and Glen Waverley, where owners want the light native colour through the living areas without the cost of timber. The long 2260 mm boards mean fewer end joins across a room.

Laminate vs real Blackbutt

Real Blackbutt can be sanded and recoated. Laminate cannot, so a deep gouge means replacing a board rather than sanding it out. On the other hand, laminate is quicker to lay, and the wear surface stands up well to kids and chairs. Ask for samples of this and our Blackbutt smooth and matte brushed boards, then put all three next to each other at home or at the showroom.

Laying it

As a floating floor it sits on underlay and is not fixed down. That makes the subfloor matter: dips and humps cause flex and noisy joins, so we check flatness and level where needed. On concrete, a moisture barrier goes down first. In apartments, the underlay may need to meet the owners corporation's acoustic rules.

Looking after it

Sweep or vacuum, then damp mop. Avoid steam mops and flooding the floor with water. The full laminate range is online, and free samples are available.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Australian Blackbutt laminate real timber?

No. It is a 12 mm laminate with a Blackbutt-look surface. If you want real Blackbutt, see our engineered Blackbutt boards in matte brushed or smooth.

Can Australian Blackbutt laminate be sanded if it gets scratched?

No, laminate can't be sanded or recoated. A badly damaged board is replaced, which is easier if you keep a spare carton from the original order.

How much does one carton of Australian Blackbutt cover?

One carton holds four boards and covers 2.13 m². A 20 m² bedroom plus about 7% for cuts needs 11 cartons.
