Blackbutt is a popular Australian hardwood with a pale, fairly even colour. It is harder than oak, so it copes well with busy family homes. This version has a matte brushed surface: low sheen, with a light texture that helps hide scratches and paw marks.
These are engineered boards: 14 mm thick with a 3 mm Blackbutt wear layer, 180 mm wide, in 1820 and 2100 mm lengths. Micro bevel, tongue and groove. Each pack holds six boards, covering 1.966 m² (1820 mm) or 2.268 m² (2100 mm).
Brushing opens up the grain slightly, and a matte coat keeps glare down. Light scratches catch less light on this kind of surface than on a glossier one, so they are harder to spot. For homes with a dog, a busy back door or kids on scooters, this is the Blackbutt we would usually recommend first.
Pale Blackbutt looks right in a lot of eastern suburbs houses: renovated Californian bungalows in Surrey Hills, new family homes in Balwyn North, and extensions where a light floor helps a long living area feel bright. It sits with white, off-white and natural stone well. See similar colours on our light oak and blonde tones page.
Being tongue and groove, these boards can be glued to a flat slab or fixed over a timber subfloor, depending on your house. We let the boards acclimatise and moisture-test the subfloor before laying. For care, vacuum and damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner, and put felt pads on chair legs. The 3 mm wear layer can be sanded and recoated later in its life. If you want full-thickness solid boards, we also supply Blackbutt as Blackbutt solid 18 mm tongue-and-groove boards. More in our Australian hardwood range.

Questions
All timber scratches, but Blackbutt is harder than oak and the matte brushed surface makes fine marks harder to see. It is the Blackbutt option we suggest for homes with pets.
Packs cover 1.966 m² with 1820 mm boards or 2.268 m² with 2100 mm boards. For a 25 m² room plus about 7% for cuts (roughly 27 m²), that is 14 packs of 1820 mm or 12 packs of 2100 mm.
No, it is engineered: a 3 mm Blackbutt wear layer on a 14 mm board. If you want full-thickness solid boards, we also supply 18 mm solid tongue-and-groove boards.
