Tallowwood Solid 18 mm is Tallowwood all the way through the board, 18 mm thick with a tongue and groove profile. It comes prefinished from the factory with 12 coats of water-based polyurethane, so the floor is already finished when it arrives. There is no sanding and coating on site after it is laid. Widths are 130 mm or 136 mm, in random lengths of 1820–2100 mm, graded Standard and better.
On our sample boards Tallowwood is a golden honey brown with an olive tinge, and some boards are noticeably darker than others. The grain is its main feature: bold arched figure and pale streaks running along the boards. It is less red than Spotted Gum or Kempas, which makes it easier to pair with greens, off-whites and natural stone. You will find it with our warm browns.
Janka hardness is 8.6 kN, a little below solid Blackbutt at 9.1 kN and well below solid Spotted Gum at 11 kN. It is still a hard floor for a living room, bedroom or study. For a kitchen with big dogs, one of the harder species will hide dents better. Slip resistance is a D1 pass under AS 4586 Appendix B.
The strong figure shows up best in a larger room with plenty of daylight, where you can see the pattern across several boards. It works well in a renovated Californian bungalow or a newer family home that needs some warmth underfoot without going dark.
Solid boards are usually secret-fixed to joists or battens, or laid over a slab on a suitable base. Solid timber shrinks and swells more with humidity than engineered board, so it is given time to acclimatise before laying. It is not suited to bathrooms or laundries. Questions
It rates 8.6 kN on the Janka scale, close to Blackbutt at 9.1 kN. That is fine for most living areas and bedrooms. If dents from pets or heavy furniture are the main concern, Spotted Gum or one of the Ironbarks will hold up better.
The difference is small and hard to see once the floor is down. We suggest the width we can best match to your room layout and any existing Tallowwood you are joining.
Yes. It is 18 mm of solid timber, so it can be sanded back more times over its life than an engineered board with a 3 mm wear layer.
For homes, 25 years structural and 5 years on the factory coating. For commercial use, 10 years structural and 3 years on the coating. Structural cover is about the board itself; coating cover is about the finish. The exact term is confirmed on your quote, and our installation work and your Australian Consumer Law rights are separate.
