Spotted Gum Solid 18 mm is Spotted Gum all the way through the board, 18 mm thick with a tongue and groove profile. It comes prefinished from the factory with 12 coats of water-based polyurethane, so the floor is already finished when it arrives. There is no sanding and coating on site after it is laid. Choose 136 mm or 92 mm widths, in random lengths of 1820–2100 mm, graded Standard and better.
On our sample boards the colour runs from honey brown to a deeper reddish brown, with the odd board clearly darker than its neighbours. It sits in our warm browns.
We also supply Spotted Gum as an engineered board, 14 mm thick with a 3 mm Spotted Gum wear layer, in smooth and matte brushed surfaces. The solid board has far more timber above the tongue, so it can be sanded back more times over its life. The trade-off is movement: solid timber shrinks and swells more with humidity than engineered, so acclimatising and fixing matter more. Our guide to engineered vs solid timber flooring goes through the differences.
Janka hardness is 11 kN, compared with 9.1 kN for solid Blackbutt, so it copes better with dropped pans and chair legs. It has a D1 pass for slip resistance under AS 4586 Appendix B.
Solid boards are usually secret-fixed to joists or battens, or laid over a slab on a suitable base. It is not suited to bathrooms or laundries. For underfloor heating, our approved floor is engineered European oak, so please talk to us before planning solid timber over heating. Questions
Yes. Our engineered Spotted Gum has a 3 mm wear layer, which limits how many times it can be sanded. The 18 mm solid board has much more timber above the tongue, so it can be sanded and recoated more times over the life of the floor.
The 92 mm board means more joins across the room and a traditional look that suits older Melbourne houses. The 136 mm board shows more grain on each board and reads a little calmer in a large open living area. You are welcome to compare both side by side in our showroom.
It can. Solid boards over a slab usually go onto a suitable base such as battens or plywood, after the slab has been moisture tested. We look at the slab when we measure up and talk you through the options.
For homes, 25 years structural and 5 years on the factory coating. For commercial use, 10 years structural and 3 years on the coating. Structural cover is about the board itself; coating cover is about the finish. The exact term is confirmed on your quote, and our installation work and your Australian Consumer Law rights are separate.
