Blackbutt Solid 18 mm is Blackbutt all the way through, 18 mm thick with a tongue and groove profile. It comes prefinished from the factory with 12 coats of water-based polyurethane, so the floor is already finished when it arrives. There is no sanding and coating on site after it is laid. Widths are 136 mm or 92 mm, in random lengths of 1820–2100 mm, graded Standard and better.
Blackbutt is one of the palest Australian hardwoods: a light straw to creamy tan, fairly even from board to board, with the occasional dark gum vein or small mark. The photo on this page is our engineered Blackbutt; the solid board is the same species and colour range. It sits in our light oak and blonde tones, and suits bright, pared-back interiors in places like Surrey Hills and Box Hill.
Our engineered Blackbutt comes in smooth and matte brushed surfaces. Those boards are 14 mm thick, with a 3 mm Blackbutt wear layer on top. The solid board is 18 mm of Blackbutt, so there is much more timber to sand back over the years. Engineered boards move less with changes in humidity and can be glued to a flat slab. Our page on engineered vs solid timber flooring covers this in more detail.
Janka hardness is 9.1 kN. That is harder than oak but a step below solid Spotted Gum at 11 kN. Slip resistance is a D1 pass under AS 4586 Appendix B.
Solid boards are usually secret-fixed to joists or battens, or laid over a slab on a suitable base. Keep it out of bathrooms and laundries. See the rest of our solid timber range, or book a free measure and quote.

Questions
Solid is 18 mm of Blackbutt and can be sanded back many times, which suits a long-term home. Engineered is 14 mm with a 3 mm wear layer, moves less with humidity and can be glued to a flat slab. We can look at your subfloor and help you decide.
Blackbutt rates 9.1 kN on the Janka scale, which is harder than oak. Claws will still leave fine marks on any timber floor. If dents are the main worry, Spotted Gum at 11 kN or Grey Ironbark at 14 kN are harder.
Our approved floor for underfloor heating is engineered European oak. For solid Blackbutt over heating, ask us first and we will talk through your system and subfloor.
For homes, 25 years structural and 5 years on the factory coating. For commercial use, 10 years structural and 3 years on the coating. Structural cover is about the board itself; coating cover is about the finish. The exact term is confirmed on your quote, and our installation work and your Australian Consumer Law rights are separate.
